5 Things To Request From Your Lawn Sprinkler Installers

A new sprinkler system will save time and water, while also helping to ensure a healthier lawn. There are a few things to ask your installers for if you want to get the most from the system.

1. Request the Plan

Your installers should have a copy of the installation schematics available to give to you. Ideally, it should show the location of all sprinkler lines, the control boxes and water hookups, and the sprinkler emitters. If your system is zoned, ask for each zone to be highlighted and numbered so you can easily see which emitters operate on which zone. These schematics will make it easier to set sprinkler timers and to service the system in the future.

2. Upgrade to Flexible Pipes

In the not-too-distant past, most sprinkler systems used rigid PVC or PEX piping for the sprinkler lines. These lines were more likely to crack, especially in winter when frost heave and frozen water expansion occurred. Nowadays, there is the option to use flexible poly piping. These pipes are flexible, which makes them less prone to damage. Less damage means fewer leaks and fewer costly repairs, so ask your installers to go with the flexible poly pipes.

3. Follow Up On Warranties

If your system is installed professionally, you should be provided with a warranty for the work. This means the service will pay for any repairs that are needed due to installation mistakes. There may also be warranties on individual components, from emitters to the pipes and control box. Make sure to inquire about these warranties at the time of installation. Your installer should provide you with the details for each one.

4. Opt for Smart Sensors

Modern sprinkler systems have surpassed the convenience of set it and forget it with the help of specialty sensors that make the system better programmable. You can have moisture and rain sensors installed, which will prevent the system from coming on if it is raining or if the soil moisture is already at a sufficient level. These sensors can be installed in each watering zone, thus ensuring the sprinklers only come on when they are needed so there is no wasted water.

5. Get Maintenance Specifics

Maintenance needs can vary depending on your climate, as well as on the design of the system. Before your installers leave, make sure they provide you with a maintenance plan. In some areas, you may need to have sprinklers blown out before a winter freeze, for example, while in others all you need to do is shut off the water. Knowing how to maintain the system prevents damages and saves cash on repairs.
